Arrest over mask infraction OK’d

FRESNO, Calif. — A federal court in California ruled in favor of the city of Porterville on a 76-year-old citizen’s claim that its lieutenant and detective unlawfully arrested her in January 2022 for wearing her mask under her nose while speaking to the city council on behalf of a group called Unmask Tulare County. She was arrested for violating a city ordinance that required face coverings within indoor public spaces, the law was valid, and the police used minimal force after the woman ignored multiple requests to properly wear her mask.
