D.C. Security Zone

WASHINGTON (CN) - Unauthorized planes keep flying through the new security zone over Washington D.C., according to an FAA regulation meant to change that.

To fly through the Air Defense Identification Zone put in place last year as a result of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, a pilot must have a flight plan for a particular purpose and a transponder code, which is different for each purpose. The pilot also has to keep certain air speeds while in the zone, and remain in contact with air traffic control.

The Federal Aviation Administration has determined that pilots who fly by sight, instead of with electronic instruments, and fly within 60 miles of a certain point at Ronald Reagan Airport in Washington D.C need "special awareness" training, so they can remember to go through these procedures.
