In UN address, Trump tells world leaders to tighten borders and scrap renewables

Warning against "open borders," the U.S. president told the UN General Assembly, "Your countries are going to hell."

MANHATTAN (CN) — President Donald Trump touted his administration’s immigration crackdown, took credit for resolving “unendable wars” and insisted climate change is a hoax as he addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.

The U.S. president had harsh words for nations with less restrictive immigration policies.

"It's time to end the failed experiment of open borders," Trump said. "I'm really good at this stuff. Your countries are going to hell."

“If you don’t stop people that you've never seen before, that you have nothing in common with, your country is going to fail,” he said later in the speech.

Trump also took aim at renewable energy, repeatedly calling climate change a “con job” and “green scam.” He claimed that global warming predictions were made up by “stupid people that have cost their countries fortunes.”

Taken together, Trump said, a focus on renewable energy and failure to tighten immigration would threaten the future of European nations. “This double-tailed monster destroys everything in its wake,” he said.

Members of the assembly laughed as Trump took shots at the UN for having a faulty escalator and broken teleprompter. The real estate mogul-turned-politician also complained that the UN didn’t take him up on his $500 million offer years ago to renovate the UN complex on the east side of Manhattan.

The president touted his role in international conflicts between Armenia and Azerbaijan; Thailand and Cambodia; and Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In addressing the war in Gaza, Trump blamed Hamas for rejecting peace offers, but acknowledged “we have to get that done.”

He disparaged countries that have recognized Palestine as its own state, as France, the U.K. and Canada have done, claiming that doing so would grant a win to terrorism.

“The rewards would be too great for Hamas terrorists … this would be a reward for these horrible atrocities,” he said.

Trump called for the release of 20 remaining hostages taken by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, but did not address the more than 68,000 people Israel has killed in Gaza since the terrorist attack nearly two years ago.

The speech lasted just under an hour, making it his longest before the assembly yet.

Despite his mockery of the UN, the president reportedly warmed on the body in a meeting later with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

“Our country is behind the United Nations 100%,” Trump told Guterres. “I may disagree with it sometimes but I am so behind it because the potential for peace at this institution is great.”
