Relativity

Milt Policzer / June 2, 2025

Things may look bleak, but have you noticed how much more awful other places are?

I don’t remember where I heard this, but one of the random bits of marketing advice that’s stuck in my mind is that a low-quality item can seem much nicer — and be sold for a higher price — if you stick it next to something of even lower quality. The opposite works too — a lower-quality item can seem worth more next to an overpriced item.

That works for horse sales. An auction may be where I heard it, but the principle works in a lot of other contexts.

Everything is relative.

Recently, the Marquette University Law School released a national survey with some interesting, if perhaps not helpful, results.

It seems that the U.S. Supreme Court last month had an approval rating of 53%. That’s not exactly a huge endorsement, but it’s up from 39% a year earlier.

Why? Did the court suddenly mend its ways and issue terrific popular rulings? Did certain justices stop accepting gifts?

How do you explain this?

It’s simple — all you have to do is stick the Court next to President Trump. The Court suddenly looks like a good deal!

JD Vance and Elon Musk, by the way, poll worse than Trump. They may be why Trump looks a bit better than he should.

Does any of this matter?

The poll says most people think the president should obey court orders and not demand impeachment of judges he doesn’t like. Polls haven’t stopped anything.

It’s tempting to be depressed by this. Maybe we should be depressed by this.

But look over there at Russia or Sudan.

Feel better now?

You’re welcome.

Have some fun. Still feeling depressed about current events? Well, stop it. Being sad doesn’t help anyone, including yourself.

Times may be weird and awful but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little bit of fun. Consider how many current events weren’t on your bingo cards.

Probably none of them, because you didn’t have a bingo card.

Well, now you do.

Enjoy.
